Activist Collective Claims to Have Scraped Countless of Music Files from the Streaming Giant

A digital rights organization has stated to have scraped a vast number of tracks from the popular streaming service and is getting ready to publish them online.

Possible Boost for AI Training

Industry experts said the seeming data breach could aid AI companies searching for data to train their models.

An entity called Anna’s Archive said it had scraped 86 million audio tracks from the platform and 256 million rows of associated data such as performer and record names. The company, which carries more than 100 million tracks, stated that the breach did not constitute its entire catalog.

“We have identified and deactivated the nefarious user accounts that were involved in illegal scraping,” stated a Spotify spokesperson.

The Swedish service, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, added that an inquiry into unauthorized access identified a third party collected public metadata and used illicit tactics to bypass DRM [digital rights management].

Archive's Declared Goal and Worries

Spotify does not believe the audio taken by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for offering links to pirated books, wrote in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

The group claimed the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music listened to by Spotify users and would be shared via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of sharing large data files online.

“Of course the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great beginning,” said Anna’s Archive, which describes its purpose as “preserving humanity’s information and culture”.

AI Training and Copyright Debate

A composer and campaigner for protecting artists’ rights, remarked the breached music would probably be used for developing AI models.

“Educating models on pirated material is sadly common in the AI industry, so this accessed music is almost certain to end up instructing AI models,” he stated.

The Anna’s Archive site makes references to a large online archive, a vast online repository of pirated books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to train its AI models.

A founder of an AI startup posted on LinkedIn that members of the public could in principle “create their own private free version of the service”. The executive said it could also enable technology firms to “train on modern music at a large volume”.

Copyright has emerged as a battleground between creatives, writers and content creators on one side and AI companies on the other.

Policy Proposals and Responses

In the UK, creative professionals have raised concerns against a government suggestion to let AI companies use protected work without permission unless the rights holder signals. Virtually every respondent to a government consultation on the idea has supported artists’ apprehensions.

The secretary of state for technology, research and development told parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the matter, noting that ministers would “use the time to get this right”. The government has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by next year.
